Churches Eligible for Forgivable Loans from U.S. Gov to Make Payroll

The Paycheck Protection Plan, part of the
federal government’s new coronavirus stimulus package, may enable your church to borrow money you won’t have to pay back, if you use it for paychecks, mortgage payments, rent and/or
utilities.
You have probably heard of the stimulus package Congress passed to help our nation respond to
the coronavirus pandemic. The CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security) Act was signed by President Trump one week ago today.
Among the many provisions of the stimulus package is the Paycheck Protection Plan. The PPP is
designed to help small businesses, including churches and other nonprofits. Applications for the PPP plan are being accepted starting today.
According to one source: “This grant portion amounts to ‘free money’ to help churches to pay
their employees in this crisis. If your church donations have fallen off in recent weeks and you are struggling to pay your staff either now or in the near future, you should look into this program
today. There is a portion of the loan you do not have to pay back if you continue to pay your staff.’”

An organization can borrow up to 2.5 times its monthly payroll. Interest rate on the loans is just 1%, with no payments due for 6 months. However, if
an organization can document that it spent the loan money on paychecks, mortgages, rents and/or utilities, the loan will be forgiven.
For more information, here is a Fact Sheet from the U.S. Treasury: Paycheck Protection Fact Sheet .
Your local bank probably has additional information and an application form available on its website.
