The Calling of a Pastor
I consider the work of a pastor as being one of the highest and greatest calling that anyone can
serve. What a marvelous calling you have as a pastor! It is more than a job; it is a special calling, privilege, blessing, and responsibility that God has placed in our lives. The role
of a pastor is more than preaching even though that is extremely important to encourage everyone to live closer to the Word of God. A pastor has a shepherd’s heart, one that cares for the health
and well-being of their flock, even when the flock is not receptive to your efforts. It can be difficult in striving to be an instrument used by God (to perfect His work) when there is
opposition or when you cannot immediately see the fruits of your labor.
One pastor told me, “I often remind myself that Jesus had opposition and that did not stop Him from doing
what he was called to do. I am called to love and encourage others, even though it may not be returned to me because I know my calling is sure.” He went on to say, “I am called to please
God, but I also called to show love and compassion to those around me at all times.”
God never promised that our calling would be easy, but He said He would always be with us. I love that
promise! I am not sure who this message is for today, but I want to encourage you to be faithful to your call. Being a pastor can be difficult because you often challenge people to live
closer to the Word of God even though they may not be willing to do so right then. But your words are like seeds, they are not going out void. The Holy Spirit will plant these seeds and
cultivate them. It might take some time to see the results but be faithful in doing what God has called you to do. I am reminded of Psalm 27:14, "Wait on
the Lord: Be of good courage. and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord." He will take us through any issue, problem, or situation. He always
has and He he will always will.
Areas of challenge and conflict have been on my heart for the last couple of months. I have been
earnestly praying for pastors who are experiencing these. In our last Zoom meeting in August, we discussed conflict management. I appreciate all the involvement with pastors who attended.
It is a subject that I may bring up again. This month, I will be discussing something we hope to never experience and that is Staff Betrayal.
Again, thank you for all you do for the Kingdom of God. Call us if we can bless or encourage
you.
